Her Game Too Cricket are delighted to announce that Whimple Cricket Club (WCC) have become the latest recreational club to partner with the campaign.

Described as sitting “at the very heart of Whimple village and the local community”, WCC is a club with a long and rich cricket history. Having built up quite the reputation and become well-known in the Southwest, the club is a facility for club league, as well as friendly cricket, and even receives visits from Devon County age-level teams and local schools.

Following similar trends across the country, Women and Girls’ cricket has been embraced with open arms at Whimple CC since its introduction.

Having partnered with Ottery St Mary Cricket Club, WCC launched its first Girls’ age-level teams in 2021 which kick-started the growth of W&Gs cricket at the club.

Following the successful launch of Girls’ cricket, the club began Women’s softball training towards the end of the 2023 season. Within just a few short weeks, the new Women’s section was already flourishing as nearly 30 women were turning up – many of whom were playing cricket for the first time.

With training proven to have been a hit, this encouraged the club to establish a winter training program and entering into the winter women's softball indoor league. The following summer, 2024, was a historic one for Whimple CC and its players as it was the first full season of Women’s softball cricket.

As the W&Gs section of the club continues to thrive, WCC are optimistic about what the future holds for their female players as, in 2025, they are entering their first Women’s team into the regional hardball ‘Super 8s’ competition.

Looking ahead to the upcoming summer, and beyond, Whimple Cricket Club are more committed than ever to growing the Women and Girls’ game. Boasting an enthusiastic and developing adult playing group, alongside their talented Girls’ set up – ranging from ECB All Stars at 4 years old to Under 17 – the sky is the limit for W&Gs cricket at the club.

It is as part of WCC’s unwavering support of Women and Girls’ cricket that they are thrilled to be entering into a partnership with Her Game Too.

James Woollam, Chairman of Whimple Cricket Club, said: “It was great to start the Girls’ age level cricket in 2021, but it was the formation of our Women’s softball team in 2023 that has driven incredible growth. The softball team now play competitive cricket through the summer and enter winter indoor leagues. It’s now time for the next step in developing women’s hardball cricket in 2025.

We have equal support of the women’s game with men’s and junior cricket, representation on our committee and through every aspect of the club. We’re delighted to be partnering with Her Game Too which demonstrates our commitment to complete equality in cricket.”

Paige Caunce, Head of Her Game Too Cricket, said: “On behalf of Her Game Too, we would like to express our gratitude to James, Susie and Liv, as well as the rest of the team at Whimple Cricket Club, for their support of this partnership.

It comes at an exciting time for not only Women’s cricket, but cricket more generally, as we see more opportunities for women and girls to get involved in cricket; whether as players, officials or even just as fans in the stands.

Whimple CC is an incredible example of how, by embracing women and girls, clubs can flourish. We are excited to begin working together and for the club to be a part of our Her Game Too family.”
